Murray Sunset national park was a great discovery. I noticed it on the map just before Mildura, and thought I would pop in for a quick ride around. Turns out it’s a very big park, and quite challenging riding for a lady of Big Blues size. I entered on Settlement Track, the sand was challenging to say the least. I tried a track offered by google maps which turned out to be unwise as the sand significantly deepened, so I turned back, I was in a very isolated national park, and it might not be wise to take single trails that I had never travelled before. Maybe it was a single trail to a main road but maybe not. I travelled on sand for ever, or so it seemed, till finally I saw a signpost (there are not many), and it directed me up rocket Track to Rocket Lake! I Followed it hoping to end up in Rocket Camp Ground.
I had a kangaroo run across Rocket Track in front of me, which was scary, and another was running along aside in the bush. I slowed to let them get away (I will post this on Youtube so go there for the full video experience, but be patient I am in a dessert right now)!
Rocket track had some sand dunes, they were like a gravel road which would turn to sand as you went over the top of the hill, and the temptation to gun Big Blue up over the top, was quickly subdued by the deep sand at the top & over the hill, she would fishtail in on the way down, lucky I was standing and you could push way back to not go over the handlebars. Thats the thing with Sand, they say gun it to ride in sand well, but look out cause when it goes wrong you will very quickly find out what its like to be on your arse! Lucky I am right side up, but it was exhilarating and very challenging! Great to finally arrive somewhere early, it was 2pm and I was in Rocket Lake Campground. So I set up the tent, laid out the sleeping gear. I took a walk and gathered some great footage of Rocket Lake, and if you are wondering there has been no water in rocket lake for 40yrs…. I will update youtube when I have a few days with power & reception, because Rocket Lake is amazing… To the moon!!
This lake is awesome, firstly there is no water and hasn’t been for 40yrs so I am told by a fellow camper who knows cause he’s been coming here for 20yrs +, and is part of the ORAT team. The ORAT team are setting up base for a bunch of adventure riders arriving to ride the park on Friday. They are setting up a huge campsite, they have generators, Beer and a Fire…. So I will be happily turning up at their campsite tonight to party on. They are a great team at ORAT.
I have been completely alone for two nights now, so a chat around the fireplace would be good,
As it turned out the Pizza was to die for, thanks to the ORAT team. Amazing to be eating Pizza in the middle of a dessert in Murray Sunset National Park!
